Luxembourg allocates €20 million to support greenhouse construction
On 6 December 2024, the Luxembourg government approved a bill to provide subsidies for the construction of greenhouses. The initiative, drafted by the Minister of Agriculture, Food and Wine, Martine Hansen, aims to support farmers wishing to grow fruit and vegetables in greenhouse conditions.
At present, Luxembourg's self-sufficiency in fruit and vegetables is extremely low. For cabbage, lettuce and carrots it is only 15 per cent, and for products such as strawberries, tomatoes and onions it is less than 1 per cent. The new project does not aim for complete food independence, but is designed to stimulate local production and meet the growing demand for fresh local produce.
Programme Terms and Conditions:
- Subsidy volume: €20 million.
- Who can participate: active farmers willing to invest in greenhouses for the production, storage and packing of fruit and vegetables.
- Investment size: €1 million to €12 million (excluding VAT).
Funding is provided through competitive applications. Only projects that demonstrate economic viability, sustainability and confirmed financing will be approved.
The subsidies are aimed at developing agriculture through the construction of modern greenhouses, reducing supply chains and supporting young farmers. Minister Martine Hansen believes that such measures will help diversify Luxembourg's agricultural sector and meet local needs.
