How to extend your Luxembourg residence permit
Renewing your residence permit is an important step, as it is the main document that legalises your stay in the country. In this guide we will tell you how to apply for an extension, what paperwork to prepare and what complications may await you depending on the grounds for extending your residence permit.
The duration of a Luxembourg residence permit may vary depending on the grounds for issue. However, in most cases the residence permit is issued for a period of time insufficient for citizenship, so the renewal of the residence permit is an important and responsible moment in the life of any expat.
ВIn 90% of cases, the grounds for extension will be the same as the grounds for the initial residence permit. For example, if you have received a residence permit for work, you will most likely be extended on this basis. There are other cases, if the previously obtained residence permit assumes a change of category. For example, if you were employed in a company, and then decided to go free sailing and opened a sole proprietorship, it is possible to extend your residence permit on the basis of a sole proprietorship in Luxembourg.
Depending on the basis for renewal, the set of documents required for the permit will vary.
You can customise the guide settings to suit your needs at the top of the page in the ‘filters’ section.
The application for the extension of the residence permit must be submitted two months before the expiry of the valid document. ‘Two months’ means that at the time of submission of the application to the Migration Board there must be at least 60 days left before the expiry of the valid residence permit. For example, if your residence permit is valid until 25 July 2024, you must submit your application and application package no later than Sunday, 26 May 2024. It is better to apply in advance to avoid weekends and public holidays. It is better to submit your request early than late.
