5 films will represent Luxembourg at the 2025 Berlinale
The 75th Berlin Film Festival, which will take place from 13 to 23 February 2025, will be a significant event for Luxembourg. The country will present five films selected for different sections of the festival, underlining its cultural influence and its growing contribution to international film production.
The main competition programme, which includes the prestigious Golden Bear and Silver Bear awards, features three Luxembourg-supported films. Among them is "La Cache", directed by Swiss filmmaker Lionel Baier. Based on the novel by Christophe Boltanski, the film tells the story of a boy who finds himself surrounded by family secrets and the historical upheavals of May 1968. This film is the last work of actor Michel Blanc, which gives it a special significance.
Another participant in the main programme was the film Reflet dans un diamant mort, created by the French duo Hélène Cattet and Bruno Forzani. The film's plot, set on the Côte d'Azur, plunges the viewer into the world of spy intrigues, memories and mysteries of the past. The documentary Timestamp by Ukrainian director Kateryna Gornostay explores the impact of the war on schoolchildren in Ukraine, creating an emotional portrait of reality without interviews or commentary.
The Panorama section, which focuses on auteur cinema, will present the film Confidente. This Turkish-French drama tells the story of a woman working in an erotic call centre whose life changes after an unexpected phone call during an earthquake. In the experimental section of Forum, the film Der Kuss des Grashüpfers, which explores the themes of death, family relationships and personal crises through elements of magical realism, will be shown.
Luxembourg will also show its presence in other aspects of the festival. Culture Minister Eric Thill will support the country's participation by visiting Berlin from 16 to 18 February, while producer Hélène Valland has been invited to the Berlinale Talents platform, where young professionals meet masters of the film industry. Actress Sophie Mousel appeared in two films in the programme and Vicky Krieps, an internationally recognised star, played in the film Hot Milk, also in competition.
Luxembourg's presence at the Berlinale 2025 will be an important milestone in the development of its cinema, emphasising the country's cultural wealth and its contribution to world art.
