Bulky waste (déchets encombrants) is on the decline in Luxembourg - and this is positive news. According to a new report by the Administration de l'environnement (Administration de l'environnement), between 2020 and 2023, the volume of such waste has decreased by 3,700 tonnes, which translates into 7 kg per inhabitant. This result is the result of systematic work on waste management and raising public awareness.
However, it is too early to rejoice: the analysis showed that 1,292 tonnes of collected items (11%) could be reused, especially furniture and toys in good condition. And 82% of all waste by weight could be collected separately and sent for recycling.
More than 60% by weight of bulky waste is mattresses, wood, plastic and furniture. A large proportion of these materials are recyclable. Interesting fact: in door-to-door collection, up to 21% of items are recyclable, while only about 9% are recyclable at special collection centres. This indicates the importance of proper sorting and distribution of waste already at the discarding stage.
Analysts also noted a surge in waste volumes in 2021 - due to devastating floods, especially in the municipalities of the SIGRE association (North East of the country: Grevenmacher, Remich, Echternach).
The report emphasises the need to further promote responsible consumption principles and create practical solutions to help people reduce the amount they throw away.
