The Luxembourg Minister of Agriculture, Food and Wine, Martine Hansen, presented data on the work of the Animal Rights Watch. Between May and December 2024, 120 applications were received via a specially created contact platform. Of these, 77 were deemed admissible and 43 were rejected as they did not fulfil the screening criteria.

Of the 77 substantiated complaints, in 70 cases veterinary inspectors travelled on site to conduct inspections. In most of these cases, the violations were either non-existent or minor.

  • None of the inspections resulted in the imposition of fines.
  • No animals were seized as part of these appeals.

The Minister noted that the new email for complaints has a positive impact on animal rights protection by facilitating prompt inspections. However, in order to improve the programme, a detailed evaluation of the programme is planned for 2025. As part of this evaluation, a survey of citizens who have used the contact platform will be conducted.

Luxembourg continues to improve its animal welfare mechanisms. Although the majority of complaints are not confirmed, the work of the inspections increases the level of control and confidence in the system. Further evaluation of the programme is expected to help make it even more effective.
