Historical overview

Bonnevoie-Sud traces its origins to a 12th-century Cistercian nunnery dissolved in the late 18th century. During this era, the district remained sparsely populated. However, its transformative journey commenced with the integration into the Grand Duchy's railway network and the inauguration of the first station in 1859. The district's rapid expansion was further marked by the consecration of its initial parish church in 1888, tragically destroyed during World War II bombings. Subsequently, the primary school, standing opposite the former church, was erected between 1902 and 1905.

20th century

The early 20th century witnessed a surge in Luxembourg City's population, prompting the construction of the present-day "Maria, Queen of Peace" church a few years after the war's conclusion. Concurrently, social housing developments proliferated in Bonnevoie-Sud, transforming a segment of the neighborhood into a popular residential enclave.

Modern times

As the years unfolded, Bonnevoie-Sud continued its magnetic pull, evolving into the capital's most populous district. Today, it captivates young couples and families, drawn not only by its dynamic ambiance but also by the serenity that defines this historically enriched neighborhood.
