As we saw when talking about the wine history of Luxembourg, the main wine-growing region of the country is the Moselle valley, so we will now take a look at the main characteristics of this region and the vines grown there. 

Moselle Valley

The Moselle stretches from Schengen to Wasserbillig over 42 km modeling an undulating landscape, cut by stretches of limestone rock, ideal cradle for viticulture. The vineyards are located on the banks of the river and extend over a width of 300 to 400 meters. More than half of which, especially in the canton of Remich, is made up of deep soils combining gypsum and Keuperian marl, producing round and honeyed wines. In the canton of Grevenmacher, the eroded soil, crossed by impermeable layers, is composed of Conchylian limestone, ideal for wines of character and race.The best vineyards are located at an altitude of between 150 and 200 meters and benefit from temperate climatic conditions, with both maritime and continental influences.

Luxembourg is known for its white wines, due to the region’s cool climate.

Grape varieties of Luxembourg

Elbling

it is one of the oldest grape varieties cultivated in the Moselle region and is native to this area. Although it has lost prominence in other parts of the world, it is still appreciated in Luxembourg. A modern Elbling is a lively wine with aromas of citrus, currant, green apple and pomegranate.

Rivaner

also known as Müller-Thurgau, is a popular variety in Luxembourg that produces fresh, light wines perfect for everyday drinking. This wine has a balanced acidity and presents fruity notes of apple, apricot and peach, complemented by spicy hints reminiscent of Muscat. 

Auxerrois

this is a less common but highly appreciated variety in Luxembourg, especially in haute cuisine. Auxerrois wines are complex and offer restrained acidity, with fresh and fruity flavors. Its aromas can range from melon and Mirabelle (yellow plum) to floral, citrus and exotic fruit notes, such as quince or even honey in high-end barrel-aged wines. This grape variety is versatile and can produce wines that evoke the quality of the great whites of Burgundy.

Pinot Blanc

this grape variety is one of the most important varieties in Luxembourg, both for the production of still wines and for the production of Crémant de Luxembourg. Pinot Blanc wines are fresh and fruity and have a lively acidity along with a delicate minerality. Its aromatic profile includes notes of citrus, white flowers, pineapple, pear and apple, with a subtle hint of almond. When aged in a barrel, it develops creamier, buttery aromas, adding an extra dimension of smoothness and richness.

Pinot Gris

this is one of the most appreciated varieties in the country and has had a growing popularity in recent decades. This grape variety produces rich and structured wines, ideal to accompany food. The resulting wines have a fresh acidity, with a notable minerality and offer aromas of citrus, pear, dried fruits, nuts and hints of toast.

Riesling

the best-known white wine variety in Luxembourg, these wines have an enlivening acidity and a complex aromatic profile that includes citrus, apple, apricot, quince and exotic fruits, along with an elegant spicy touch. It is a grape variety that strongly reflects the terroir of the Moselle and can produce everything from dry wines to late-harvest versions or ice wines, all with great aging potential.

Chardonnay

this Burgundian variety was recently introduced in the Moselle region and has become very popular. They are very intense wines, with notes of vanilla and toasted touches. These wines can be kept in bottles for several years.

Gewürztraminer

this wine is an explosion of aromas and flavors, offering an unparalleled taste experience, with intense aromas of rose, litchi, peach, apricot, orange, grapefruit and honey. It has a perfect balance between sweet and savory and is ideal to enjoy as an aperitif or as an accompaniment to refined cheese dishes. Its voluptuous and aromatic character makes it one of Luxembourg's most sensory wines.

Pinot noir

this grape variety produces a red wine with aromatic notes typical of red fruit. When aged in barrels, it adds a touch of vanilla and toast. It combines perfectly with red meats.

Saint Laurent

it is a grape variety of the Burgundy family, generally developed in high quality wines. It is characterized by its powerful aroma and dark color. Intensely perfumed and fruity, this wine contains aromatic notes of wild berries, cherries, plums and, when ripe, a touch of bitter chocolate.
