Historical overview

With its rich abundance of springs, the region that now comprises the Niederanven commune has been inhabited since ancient times, evidenced by numerous archaeological discoveries.

Before Luxembourg

Two millennia ago, Luxembourg wasn't yet a recognized country but was a part of the Roman Empire. In the 2nd century AD, the Empire's borders spanned from Scotland in the Northwest to the Euphrates in the Southeast, with Luxembourg falling within the territory of the Treveri. The political and religious center of this people was initially the Titelberg oppidum (in the present-day commune of Pétange) and later the Roman city Augusta Treverorum (modern-day Trier). Surrounding this major city were secondary settlements, or vici, comparable to our current villages, organized around primary and secondary communication routes.

Vicus of Andethanna

Among these merchant and artisan settlements was the vicus of Andethanna, situated in Niederanven. Notably, the main Roman roads traversing the Grand Duchy included the Reims-Trier route through Arlon and Mamer, and the Lyon-Cologne route through Dalheim and Trier. The vicus of Andethanna was located along the former.

Hiking around archeological sites

One significant archaeological find occurred in 1938 when hikers stumbled upon the remains of a lime kiln between the hamlets of Senningen and Senningerberg. Despite the absence of a nearby limestone quarry, it was hypothesized that the kiln utilized the Roman road for its supply. In 1999, the University of Cologne dated the site, determining that the lime kiln was constructed between 65 and 75 AD, based on a piece of wood found alongside it. Romans introduced lime mastery to the region for construction purposes, using it as a binding material in their structures. This historical exploration unveils the deep roots of human habitation and industry, connecting Niederanven to the broader narrative of the Roman era in the Luxembourgish landscape.
