Historical overview

The valley of Roeser has a rich prehistoric legacy, dating back to the Stone Age. Archaeological findings, including stone tools like hammers, axes, and flint weapons, indicate habitation by early societies around four thousand years BCE. The Bronze Age, circa 1200 BCE, reveals a more sophisticated way of life near Peppange.

Roman era

Around 53 BCE, Julius Caesar introduced Roman civilization, ending the Celtic dominance and ushering in Gallo-Roman refinement. Evidence of sizable villas along the Roman road connecting Rome to Germanic provinces attests to the region's significance.

Middle ages

The Gallo-Roman civilization persisted until the Early Middle Ages, facing challenges from Barbarian invasions in the 5th and 6th centuries. The Franks, warrior-peasants, brought changes, introducing village systems and Christianity. The 7th century marks the first appearance of "Roeser," possibly derived from "Ros" or "Ross," signifying "rose" or "marsh." In the 13th century, the Lords of Rosière controlled the valley, leading to feudal fragmentation. The Rodenmacher family dominated from 1479 until the French Revolutionary troops arrived in 1795.

French revolution

The 16th and 17th centuries saw devastating epidemics and wars, notably the Thirty Years' War. Plagues and conflicts decimated the population, with the War of Conquest by Louis XIV leaving villages ravaged in the late 17th century. Empress Maria Theresa's reign from 1740 brought stability, revitalizing agriculture, and initiating the first census in 1768. In 1798, revolutionary French forces conquered Roeser, ending the feudal era. François Blouet became the first mayor, initiating political unity but leading to hardships for the church.

Railroad developement

The late 19th century brought transformative developments, including the Guillaume-Luxembourg railway and the relocation of Fentange station to Berchem-Bivange in 1876. This enhanced connectivity united the villages, fostering interactions. Notably, in 1879, Edward Steichen, born in Bivange, later became a renowned photographer globally. Around the same time, the Benedictine Sisters founded a monastery in Peppange, known for its painted frescoes.

World War and Roeser

The two World Wars heavily impacted Roeser, with its residents forced to leave due to their proximity to the Maginot Line. German persecution and forced recruitment during the wars resulted in numerous casualties. Following liberation in 1945, Roeser experienced enduring peace, allowing the commune to flourish and expand, becoming the tranquil haven it is today. The sacrifices of its people during tumultuous periods are commemorated, ensuring their memory lives on.
