Historical overview

The territory of the Schuttrange commune harbors remnants of a significant Roman road stretching from Trier to Metz, indicative of ancient human presence dating back to the Bronze Age.

Abbey and farming

Following the Romans, the Franks established settlements in the Syre Valley. By 1047, records show that the Abbey of Saint-Maximin in Trier owned the village then known as "Schittringen", which by the 1200s had evolved into a sizable agricultural domain comprising 24 farms.

Feudal times

Over time, ownership and rights in Schittringen transitioned into secular hands, adhering to feudal system dynamics. The first census in 1766 recorded 624 inhabitants, predominantly engaged in agriculture, although the presence of four mills hinted at a burgeoning industry.

Railways change everything

Between 1848 and 1862, widespread emigration to America or France occurred due to economic hardship. However, economic revitalization commenced after 1860 with the construction of a railway line, leading to continuous population growth over the ensuing century, signaling an enduring trajectory of development.

Today, Schuttrange is a modern and well-established commune for residents of all ages, close to nature and the city center equally.
