An unusual incident occurred on the A3 motorway near Lebanon on Saturday afternoon: a young cow on the carriageway forced the police to block traffic in both directions for several hours. It all started with surprised calls from drivers who spotted the animal running amongst cars. Attempts by the police to isolate the cow only made the situation worse: the frightened animal jumped over the concrete barrier, causing chaos.

The police car used to block traffic was damaged and the cow was aggressive towards police officers and drivers in the traffic jam. To calm her down, sedative darts had to be used. The cow was not immobilised until closer to 17:00, after which it was tied to a fence to await the owner's arrival. Traffic on the motorway was not restored until 18:30.

The police were unable to explain how the animal got on the motorway, especially as road works were underway in the area. However, according to the Civil Code, the owner of the animal is responsible for the accident. If it turns out that the cow escaped due to a dog attack, for example, the dog owner will be held liable.

Local farmers, including one eyewitness, could not confirm who the animal belonged to. According to one of them, such cases are rare, especially in autumn, when most animals are already in their winter pens.
