POST Luxembourg raises prices for its services
POST Luxembourg has announced the introduction of new rates for letters and parcels both domestically and internationally. The main innovation is the division of the world into six geographical zones, which will allow for more precise price adjustments depending on the destination.
Significant savings are expected for senders of light parcels up to 2 kg to Zone 1 countries, which includes Luxembourg's neighbouring countries as well as the Netherlands and Portugal. For these destinations, the cost of dispatch will be reduced by 50%, which is particularly favourable for national e-commerce.
However, domestic shipments will become more expensive: sending a parcel up to 2kg within Luxembourg will cost €7.2 instead of the previous €6, and heavier parcels will cost €22 instead of €12.
Mailing rates will increase for all categories. For example:
- standard letter within the country - 1.2 euros instead of 1;
- letter to European countries - 1.7 euros (+30 cents);
- letter to countries outside Europe - 2.4 euros (+65 cents).
Post Luxembourg attributes the innovations to a desire for long-term sustainability. However, the downward trend in postage is clear: last year, the average household demand for stamps was just four pieces. This reflects the global shift from traditional mail to digital communication formats.
The Post's decision is rather ambiguous. On the one hand, its desire to compensate for the loss of revenue by increasing rates is understandable. On the other hand, however, such a decision could further alienate potential customers, who are increasingly turning to electronic means of communication.
