Rossmillen intersection: how Luxembourg is tackling the safety issue
As part of the project to reconstruct the junction between roads CR338 and CR335 in the Rossmillen area, the Luxembourg Ministry of Transport presented solutions to improve safety. Studies have revealed a lack of visibility and a high risk of accidents on this section.
Although a roundabout was initially considered, the idea was abandoned for several reasons:
- Challenging topography: steep gradient and proximity to residences and bodies of water.
- Environmental Impacts: Implementation of the project would require extensive environmental intervention.
A change in traffic priority and a reduction of the maximum speed to 70 km/h is preferred. This will help to improve visibility and reduce accidents.
Since 2013, 6 road accidents have been registered at the site, including:
- 4 with minor injuries,
- 2 with serious injuries (3 cases involved motorbikes).
These measures are designed to reduce accidents and provide safer traffic in a low-traffic area where traffic lights or more sophisticated solutions might not be effective.
The intersection reconstruction project aims to preserve the natural environment and minimise construction works. At the same time, it takes into account the recommendations for safety on intercity roads.
