Luxembourg Airport (Lux-Airport) has a huge impact on the country's economy, generating €9.2 billion, equivalent to almost 13% of Luxembourg's GDP. This data was presented at a press conference by the airport's CEO, Alexander Flassak, and experts from SEO Amsterdam Economics, an independent research organisation specialising in economic analysis.

According to the study, Lux-Airport's contribution to the economy consists of several components: direct effect, €1.6 billion, supporting 7,000 jobs; indirect effect, €2.2 billion; induced effect, €2.4 billion; tourism impact, €1.7 billion; and catalytic effect, €1.1 billion. In total, the airport supports 90,000 jobs, making it one of the country's most important economic engines.

According to Martin Adler, senior SEO researcher at Amsterdam Economics, €9.2bn is a minimum estimate. He noted that the real contribution could be higher, as the study was based on data from 2019, when international traffic has yet to recover from the pandemic.

Dr Christiaan Behrens, SEO project manager at Amsterdam Economics, confirmed that if the study had been based on 2024 data, the results could have been even more impressive given the significant growth in passenger and freight traffic.

Despite limited spatial resources, Lux-Airport is planning extensive investments in sustainable development and infrastructure modernisation. Gilio Fonck, member of Lux-Airport's Board of Directors, emphasised the importance of environmental sustainability in future development plans.

At the same time, Alexander Flassak noted that expansion of the airport's territory is impossible, and the construction of a second runway is ruled out. This means that future development will focus on improving the efficiency of existing facilities.

Luxembourg Airport not only provides jobs and revenues for local companies, but also supports international trade, tourism and investment attraction. Its catalytic impact on logistics, the financial sector and business tourism underlines the strategic importance of the airport for the country's continued economic growth.

Experts are confident that with further investment and infrastructure optimisation, Lux-Airport's contribution to the economy could grow significantly, strengthening Luxembourg's position as an international economic and logistics hub.
