The unemployment rate in Europe was 6.2 per cent

In January 2025, the unemployment rate in the euro area was 6.2%, stable compared to December 2024 and down from 6.5% in January 2024. In the EU, the rate was also unchanged from December 2024 at 5.8%, down from 6.1% a year earlier.
According to Eurostat, there were 12,824 million unemployed in the EU in January 2025, of which 10,655 million are in the euro area. Compared to December 2024, the total number of unemployed in the EU decreased by 8,000 and in the euro area by 42,000.
Youth unemployment in January 2025 was 14.6 per cent in the EU and 14.1 per cent in the euro area, stable compared to December 2024 in the EU and down 0.1 per cent in the euro area. Since last January, the youth unemployment rate has fallen by 36 000 in the EU and by 93 000 in the euro area.
The unemployment rate for women in January 2025 was 6.0% in the EU and 6.4% in the euro area, unchanged from the previous month. For men, the rate was 5.6% in the EU and 6.0% in the euro area, also unchanged from December 2024.
