Luxembourg does not support the introduction of border controls
On 11 November, Interior Minister Léon Gloden and Foreign Minister Xavier Bettel addressed a joint meeting of the Commission. They reiterated their position against the introduction of border controls, recalling that such measures are contrary to Schengen principles, with rare exceptions, as in the case of Germany.
Léon Gloden explained that Germany continues border controls due to internal security threats and the fight against illegal immigration, which is in line with Schengen rules but does not cover migration reasons. He also noted that Luxembourg could appeal to the European Commission if Germany decides to tighten controls.
A Luxembourg police spokesman told MPs that the country's police are not involved in German border controls, but maintain close co-operation with their German counterparts. He also noted that Luxembourg and France have signed agreements to strengthen joint patrols on trains and roads. Controls at the German border have an impact on the traffic and lives of cross-border workers, while in France such measures are sporadic and have little impact on transport.
Léon Gloden noted that 49 Luxembourg nationals have been refused entry since the introduction of increased controls by Germany. However, the minister added, there are no legal grounds for proceedings.
Xavier Bettel has expressed concern about the future of the Schengen zone, hinting that the actions of some countries could lead to its destruction. He also warned that it could undermine the foundations of free movement in Europe.
