Repairs on the A1: extensive closures and detours in Luxembourg

From Friday 25 April 2025, from 22:00 to Monday morning 28 April (05:00), the Luxembourg Roads Authority (Administration des ponts et chaussées) will carry out a complete resurfacing of the A1 motorway - from the Kirchberg interchange to the Croix de Gasperich. This will entail major changes in traffic organisation and lengthy detours.
The main motorway towards Luxembourg will be completely closed between the Kirchberg and Croix de Gasperich junctions. Also inaccessible will be:
- the exits from the Hamm interchange onto the A1;
- Exit A3 (from Metz) onto A1 towards Trier;
- Croix de Gasperich exits from the A1 towards the A3 (both directions).
On the section between Kirchberg and Gasperich, traffic will be organised as two-way traffic with one lane in each direction. The maximum speed limit is 70 km/h in the open section and 50 km/h in the tunnels.
Detours: how to bypass road closures
- The movement from Hamm towards Croix de Gasperich is via the N2, B3 and A3.
- From Hamm towards Trier via the N1 and the Senningerberg junction.
- Traffic from A3 (from Metz) towards A1 and on to Trier via A3 → Livange → A3 to Luxembourg → Croix de Gasperich.
- Exit A1 (in bidirectionnel mode) onto A3 towards Metz - via Croix de Gasperich → A6 to Belgium → Croix de Cessange → A4 to Esch-sur-Alzette → Esch link → A13 to Schengen → Croix de Bettembourg.
- Exit A1 to A3 towards Luxembourg - similar but ends at A4 towards Luxembourg.
The work on the traffic pattern change will begin several hours before the main closure, so traffic jams are possible as early as Friday evening. Up-to-date information can be found at: www.cita.lu.
