Border controls tightened in Germany

Germany plans to increase temporary border controls at all nine of its land borders in an effort to reduce illegal migration and keep citizens safe from threats, including Islamic extremism.
Controls will be introduced at the borders with France, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Belgium and Denmark for a period of six months. The Home Office has notified the European Commission and the countries concerned of the decision.
These measures will remain in place until the EU's external borders are securely protected under the new Common European Asylum System. One of the preconditions for the introduction of such measures was attacks by asylum seekers on the country's residents. In August, a Syrian man killed three people with a knife in Solingen, and in Munich, police eliminated a suspected terrorist near the Israeli consulate.
