With an average of around 5.5 trips per year with at least one overnight stay, mostly in summer, Luxembourgers are second only to Swedes (9 trips) and Finns (7 trips). Ireland and France are also in the top 5 with around 4 trips.

However, when looking at the number of nights spent away from home in tourist establishments during holidays or family visits, Luxembourg emerges as the EU country with the most trips. With 36 nights per inhabitant per year, Luxembourg is ahead of Sweden (30 nights) and Finland (25). Belgium (11), Portugal (8) and Italy (5) are far behind.

The statistics for Luxembourg, by the way, show an increase compared to the period before the Covid pandemic. In 2019, residents reported taking 4 trips per year for an average of 27 nights away from home.

You don't have to travel far to be happy. In 2023, 770,000 vacationers will prefer to vacation close to home, less than 300 km from home, and this number will increase from 2021. Of the total, about 40% will be traveling to visit family or friends, and the rest will be on vacation. Meanwhile, more than 25% of the trips booked by Luxembourg residents last 10 nights or more. According to Statec, "long-term" vacationers are mainly students, retirees and foreigners living in Luxembourg.
