Police to be allowed to arm themselves with long-range tasers

The question of possibly equipping the Luxembourg police with Tasers is not new. In 2018, Leon Gloden, then an opposition CSV MP, asked Minister Étienne Schneider this question, but it was not discussed. Six years later, the former mayor of Grevenmacher, now Minister of Internal Security, has to answer the same question. Today, the idea of using this type of weapon, which has already been used in France and Germany, is no longer considered taboo.

"It is necessary to evaluate the use of the Taser," said the CSV minister on Tuesday, stressing the need to adapt and improve police equipment "to new realities and needs". A new perspective was offered on the use of the new long-range Taser, which, according to deputies Tom Weidig and Fred Keup, has caused only one injury per 3,000 uses in France.

However, the proposal to introduce Tasers for Luxembourg police officers was not adopted unanimously. In his parliamentary reply, Schneider pointed to the difficulty of training and the problem of adding new weapons to the police arsenal.
